What is a vinyl record?
Pressed records are mass-produced, while lathe cut records are meticulously crafted from clear or black polycarbonate plastic, individually cut one at a time. Each record is created in real-time by Rich Flores, utilizing a record cutting lathe with a cutting stylus that carves grooves directly into the material. This vinyl cutting service allows for small runs and even single copies, making it perfect for artists, DJs, and audiophiles seeking custom vinyl without the high minimums associated with traditional pressing plants.
What is a record cutting service?
Record cutting involves using a lathe to carve grooves onto a lacquer-coated disc or polycarbonate blank. This record cutting service offers the process on demand, enabling customers to order custom records in any quantity— even just one. I handle the audio pre-mastering, cutting, and finishing of each record individually.
Pressing plants often require minimum orders of 200 or more. Our discs, however, are crafted in real-time with a diamond embossing stylus, eliminating minimum order quantities. You can order exactly as many as you need—be it one custom 45 rpm record or a small run for a limited release.
How do they sound?
The sound reproduction from our lathe cut records is comparable to high-fidelity pressed mono records. Our diamond embossing stylus produces outstanding audio quality that rivals traditional lacquer dubplates. The polycarbonate material not only ensures durability but also maintains excellent sound fidelity across the entire frequency spectrum.

I specialize in creating high-quality records, specifically custom 45 rpm 7" polycarbonate varieties. To achieve sound quality that rivals traditional lacquer dubplates, I develop unique sapphire embossing styli. My journey began in 1972 with Walter Gibbons, where I started cutting lacquers before polycarbonate discs existed, cutting lacquer acetate discs at that time. Today, my lathe cut records are crafted with my exclusive diamond stylus.
Although my vinyl cutting service operates in stereo, it's essential to note that these embossed polycarbonate discs must be recorded in mono to minimize playback tracking errors. However, if cut in stereo, they will still play back in mono. This illustrates the differences when considering lathe cuts versus pressed vinyl.
My custom 45 rpm records start as a square polycarbonate sheet measuring 7.5" x 7.5". After the grooves are embossed using my exclusive diamond stylus, the sheet is trimmed into a round disc. Purchasing square blanks is a more cost-effective option compared to round discs, yet the sound quality and loudness remain comparable to that of a lacquer mono record. This process emphasizes the craftsmanship of my lathe cut records, particularly when considering the differences between our embossed polycarbonate and pressed vinyl. Additionally, our vinyl cutting service ensures high-quality results tailored to your needs.
Demonstrating how to mix our custom 45 rpm lathe cut records made of black polycarbonate without backtracking is crucial. Using the 'stop and go' method with these discs can be challenging, especially when comparing embossed discs to pressed vinyl, which highlights the value of our vinyl cutting service.

Comparing audio files against the original audio is essential when assessing the quality of our custom 45 rpm records. This comparison helps me distinguish between the actual audio file and the lathe cut records, ensuring that each release meets the highest sound quality possible, thanks to our professional vinyl cutting service.

The Scully machine, custom built by Bridgeport Machine Co. in 1957, has been instrumental in vinyl cutting services, particularly in the production of lathe cut records and custom 45 rpm lacquer masters.
For the past 10 years, I've been manufacturing 'The Sapphire Embossing Stylus,' which is sold exclusively through recordlatheparts.com. Two years ago, I designed a DIAMOND embossing stylus that I now use for my work, particularly for producing custom 45 rpm lathe cut records with high audio quality through my vinyl cutting service.
